Siemens Science Experience FAQs
1. What will I be doing during the program? You will be doing lots of hands-on activities in a university laboratory in a wide range of science and technology topics and participating in short lectures/demonstrations in a lecture theatre. You will also learn about careers in science and may visit places of scientific interest. Social activities and a BBQ are often a part of the program.
2. How much does it cost? The full fee to register and attend a program is $105 (includes GST), payable either by the participant or sponsors. As this is a program supported and promoted by Rotary International since its beginnings in 1990, most Rotary clubs are willing to sponsor one or more students for full or part of the registration fee.
3. What does the registration fee cover? The fee enables you to attend and participate in all of the activities during the three-day program. There will be no additional charges to participate fully in the program at the venue. However, you must make your own arrangements and meet the cost of personal travel to and from the program, and for any costs for accommodation. You are usually expected to provide your own lunch.
4. How do I contact my local Rotary club? Check your local phone book for details of your local Rotary club or ask at your school, local post office, police station or local government office. Some Rotary clubs have websites.
5. Do you only take "top science students"? If you are in Year 9, have an interest in science and pay the $105 registration fee, you will be accepted into a program provided that there is a position available.
6. My school hasn't heard of the program. Where can I get an application? Twenty copies of The Siemens Science Experience 2008/2009 brochures, containing an application form, are sent to all secondary schools in Australia in May 2008. However, if a brochure is not available at your school, send your details through the 'contact us' page and a brochure will be sent. Alternatively, contact us for a copy.
7. When will I get detailed information about the program and times? You will receive detailed information from the local organising committee including the details of the daily program, times and meeting places (usually with a detailed map), approximately three weeks prior to the program. Information about January programs should be available by mid December.
8. What do I need to wear? For safety and legal reasons, it is important that students wear or bring enclosed shoes (no thongs/open sandals). Laboratory departments and tours strictly enforce a dress code so that standards are met. Please note that without appropriate footwear, students will NOT be allowed into the laboratories and will miss out on activities.
9. What do I need to bring? - Small day pack or bag that can be carried all day - Water bottle/snacks as required - Lunch will be provided on the first day only. - A packed lunch is recommended for the third day as lunch may be eaten while on a field trip. Food may be purchased from campus facilities on the second day. - Sunscreen, hat and comfortable clothing especially if it is very hot - Enclosed comfortable shoes (for laboratory work and tours) - Pen and pencil 10. What DON'T I bring? - Laboratory equipment such as coats, safety glasses and calculators will be provided as necessary - We do not encourage students to bring valuables of any kind (eg electronic games, ipods); however, if you would like to bring a camera, we suggest bringing along a disposable one - We strongly advise students to bring sufficient money to cover lunch and transport needs for that day only - Cigarettes and alcohol are strictly forbidden
11. I am in Year 8 (or Year 10). Can I attend? The program is for Year 9 students entering Year 10, however, if vacancies exist after the closing date, local organisers are sometimes willing to accept slightly younger or older applicants. Your application, preferably accompanied by a brief statement of the special reasons for attending, will be held until after the closing date and if vacancies remain, will be submitted to the local organiser for a decision.
12. I attended last year and enjoyed it so much - can I go again this year? If you have already participated in a program you are not eligible to attend again. If you are in Year 10 or higher you may like to contact the Young Scientists of Australia in your State and find out about being a helper at one of the programs.
