This is a bridging course that provides an introduction to first year chemistry courses at the University of Adelaide. You can be sure that you will be far better prepared for courses and subjects that require a knowledge of chemistry if you participate in the course.
Year 12 Chemistry is either a pre-requisite or assumed knowledge for the following programs:
A knowledge of Year 12 Chemistry is assumed for the following courses::
The course prepares students who have not done Year 12 Chemistry or feel that they have an inadequate understanding of Chemistry, to take on these courses and subjects with much more confidence, but it is not a requirement.
The course has been a help to students taking chemistry at other institutions. In this situation consult us to check that the course is suitable.
Medicine (and Medicine transfers) - this course does not directly prepare for you for GAMSAT but may help as an introduction to a GAMSAT chemistry course. There is a GAMSAT specific course now on offer to students.
Students are introduced to the elementary concepts of chemistry through a combination of lectures and small group tutorials (about 10 people per class). The course involves about 45 hours of lectures and tutorials.
The course covers a great deal of the background and elementary ideas of chemistry that are taught in Level I chemistry courses, and that are required for other subjects at the University of Adelaide such as Biology - Molecules Genes and Cells .
By concentrating the teaching in small groups each student receives the maximum personal assistance. A comprehensive set of notes with practice exercises is included in the course.
The course also promotes indirect benefits such as an introduction to university life and lasting friendships. We have found that those who take the course do well in Foundations of Chemistry and other courses at the University.
The course is given by experienced staff who are currently teaching chemistry at the University of Adelaide.
You will find the course of considerable benefit if you:
If you are uncertain about the possible benefits please contact us for advice.
The course runs for 2 weeks in the summer break, from Monday 8th to Friday 19th of February 2010, from 9 am to 3 pm each day.
The course will be given at the University of Adelaide North Terrace campus map.
The course will cost $485 including GST and the full fee is normally paid when you enrol. Payment may be made by cash, cheque (made payable to Aduchem Pty Ltd), or credit card (MasterCard or Visa).
It is expected that all potential students will be able to take the course.
Contact us by phone or email (details below) with your name and contact details even if you are not yet sure you will take the course. We can then contact you in December with further details.
We are always willing to discuss any aspect of the course with prospective students.

“The Aduchem course really took the pressure off my first semester returning to Uni. It covered all of the chemistry basics and some of the more advanced stuff, which really gave me a head start and I met some great friends who I’m still studying with now. I would recommend it to anyone who is not totally confident with their chem knowledge.”
“Doing the Aduchem course put me in a good position for the start of my Foundations of Chemistry Course. I never did science or maths after year ten. The two weeks of classes helped me familiarise myself with the key topics on the Foundations curriculum, the chemistry buildings and staff. By the time I started the year proper I was more confident and reassured that I wasn't coming in from the cold. Well worth it.”
