Careers in the Sciences

What does a Scientist do?

Just about anything!

Biologists, Chemists or Geneticists can work in laboratories, Physicists can find themselves busy with theoretical mathematics and Geologists and Ecologists can be outdoors exploring the state of our natural resources! But the path your future career will take is up to you!

Depending on the type of science you specialise in, and the sort of work you want to do, a Science Degree can be a passport to an incredible and exciting career in a wide range of fields. Employment agencies across Australia list job vacancies in broad science and technology areas - check out the positions currently listed!

Do you want to be a World-Class Researcher?

Studying in the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Adelaide also opens up a great range of research opportunities, and our research scientist are both internationally recognised and sought-after!

Students who study in the Faculty of Sciences are well prepared for continuing post-graduate studies. This can be a 1-year Honours project, which can then be followed by even higher qualifications such as Masters or a PhD. You can view the current projects available, and follow the links to contact potential supervisors.

This is because the skills acquired as an Undergraduate student at the University of Adelaide are both specific to the sort of science studied (eg. understanding the biology of heart disease) but also more general (eg. communicating difficult concepts to a diverse audience). Many of our graduates are employed in interesting jobs, which use these specific science skills. In addition, the Public Service and numerous industries have graduate recruitment programs where they look for well developed general skills including good oral and written communication skills, the ability to work within a group, and leadership and organisational skills.

The degrees offered by the Faculty provide for the progressive development of both scientific and general skills.

Visit the University's "Get A Great Future" site for information about your career aspirations and study options.
