For this trial the iPads are being given to commencing first year Sciences Students in 2011, who enrol in a minimum of 2 semester 1 courses within the Sciences program. If you remain enrolled past the 31 March Census date, you can retain the iPad for your own use.

The iPad is a small but integral part to a much larger strategy to drive innovation and relevancy of the curriculum within our Undergraduate Programs. In 2011 we want to trial the use of this technology to support new ways of teaching.

The University of Adelaide is the first Australian university to use iPads as an essential classroom teaching tool on this scale.

Science students increasingly are looking for more flexible, relevant and up-to-date teaching methods. The iPad enhanced learning is designed to give Faculty of Sciences students what they want, and also providing the kind of quality teaching that they need.

No. iPad enhanced learning in the Faculty of Sciences will complement face-to-face teaching not replace it. It will make the educational experience more flexible for the student and can also provide a greater level of interactivity in the classroom thereby improving student engagement and academic outcomes.

First-year Sciences teaching staff will be provided with an iPad and professional development to ensure that they are well prepared to trial this new technology.

For this trial, only commencing first year students who are enrolled in a minimum of 2 courses within degree programs administered solely by the Faculty of Sciences will receive an iPad in 2011. These programs are listed below (last link below).

Yes. If you do not like using the iPad for whatever reason it is not a necessary part of your study within Sciences. This is a trial to evaluate how new technology can improve our teaching delivery.

First year commencing students, who enrol in a minimum of 2 semester 1 courses within the Faculty of Sciences Bachelor programs will be included in the initiative. These programs are listed below.

Eligible first year students enrolled in the following science courses at the University of Adelaide will receive an iPad as part of the iPad enhanced learning initiative in 2011.

Yes . If you are a commencing first year Sciences Student starting mid-year in 2011, and enrol in a minimum of 2 semester 2 courses within the Sciences program, you will receive an iPad. If you remain enrolled past 31 August Census date you can retain the iPad for your own use.

Yes. The iPad has limited use as a word processing tool. You can certainly produce work on it but this would need to be emailed to your usual computer / computer at the University in order to access the document and format it appropriately.

No. The iPads are the first part of a much larger strategy which will aim towards having text books online and long term Open Source access. However, initially you are likely to have to buy some text books in 2011.

Yes. All students who are eligible will receive one irrespective of their current circumstances

The iPad is being given to you and you are therefore responsible for it. Insurance would be recommended.

You will need to return the iPad to the Faculty of Sciences.

Technical
|
Yes. When you receive your iPad you will receive instruction on its use should you require it. The iPad is very easy and intuitive to use.

Yes. But if a student wishes to activate the 3G capability they will need to pay for it themselves.

Resources will be made available on the web for frequently asked questions / issues and applications that have been recommended.

- On the iPad, tap the 'Settings' icon.
- On the Settings menu, tap Wi-Fi.
- Next to Wi-Fi, tap the "On/Off" selector until it reads "On."
- Under choose a network, select 'UofA'
- Enter your student ID (prefixed by the a) and your password.
- Accept certificates when prompted.Once the device has connected, you will be returne to list of available networks.

- On the Settings menu, tap 'Mail, Contacts, Calendars'.
- Tap 'Add Account...'
- Tap 'Gmail'
- Under ' Gmail'
- Name: Enter your name
- Address: Enter your email address e.g. a1234567@student.adelaide.edu.au
- Password: Enter the password that goes with your student number
- Description: This can be anything. This will be the name of your mail account (Suggest UofAGmail).
- Tap 'Next'
- Check Mail and Calendars are switched in the'Mail','Calendar' and 'Notes' Gmail screen
- Tap 'Save'

No, the Faculty will not provide any applications pre-loaded on your. Your course coordinators will recommend applications for their particular courses. Purchase of applications can be made through iTunes. http://www.apple.com/itunes/

Here are two ways you can keep your iPad secure:
1. Set a Passcode Lock
If you are going to use your iPad to connect to your University of Adelaide email or another personal email, it is recommended you secure your iPad with a passcode. To set up a passcode lock:
- On the iPad, tap the 'Settings' icon
- On the Settings menu, tap 'General'
- Tap 'Passcode Lock', then tap "Turn Passcode On"
- Enter a passcode, then re-enter the passcode when prompted.
2. Find my iPad
It is also recommended you download the free 'Find my iPad' app. Acquisition of the application can be made through iTunes. This app will allow you to:
- Locate your iPad
- Send a message to display on your iPad or play a sound
- Remotely lock your iPad
- Remotely wipe your iPad to restore factory settings.

You may need to reset your wireless settings:
- On the iPad, tap the 'Settings' icon.
- On the Settings menu, tap Wi-Fi.
- Netx to Wi-Fi, tap the "On/Off" selector to "Off."
- Go back to the Settings screen, then tap General.
- Tap 'Reset', then tap 'Reset Network Settings'.
- Your iPad will restart.
- After the iPad restarts, tap the 'Settings' icon.
- Tap Safari, then Autofill and set both Autofill selectors to "Off." Also, tap "Clear All." to remove currently stored Autofill settings.
