Computing Facilities
This page documents some important information about IT facilities provided by the
Faculty of Sciences. Please take the time to read this information and
acquaint yourself with the computing suites and their use. Use the online
manual to access basic instructions and advice on computer operation.
It is vitally important that you are aware of the Internet and Print charging
system that operates in all student computing suites.
The Information
Technology Services for Students site provides additional information
about University-wide IT facilities and services available to students.
This includes the MyUni system (lecture notes and the online education
information), Student Email and IT Rules and Policies relating to students.
In particular, students should read and understand the Rules
for Student use of Computers and be aware of the IT Acceptable Use Policy .
Internet Access
See the Student Net Access
Plan site for information about the University's Internet use management
strategy. All students receive an Internet usage allocation each semester
for University related access. Students can purchase additional allocations
as required.
Student Dialup Service
The University of Adelaide provides a free Dialup
Service for access to the University's online resources from home
computers. For the price of a phone call students can access the Internet
or IT resources such as MyUni and the Library electronic resources. No
contracts or minimum payments required! Visit the link above to find out
how to configure your home computer to access the dial in service.
Student Printing Quotas
There has been significant changes in print charging for 2005. Please see the student printing page for more details. Printing above your quota will be charged
accordingly. You can check your printer usage at any time by visiting the Printing
Account summaries page.
Rules for student use of computers
The following rules are in place to make sure that the suites are pleasant,
efficient and reliable environments to work in. Anyone who does not follow
them will be asked to leave.
- Only students enrolled in Faculty of Sciences subjects can use these
suites.
- No eating or drinking in the Suite. Food and drink can cause damage
to computer equipment.
- No games. Games attract groups of people and lead to noise.
- Treat the room as a library so that other users can concentrate.
- Web Browsing is for course work only. Inappropriate use of the web
browser slows down the network.
- Except where we indicate otherwise, software must not be copied. Software
is licensed for use in the Suite and must not be copied for use elsewhere
unless specifically stated in course notes.
- Do not use suite computers to download music from the Internet. It
is an offence for students or staff to download music from the Internet
unless with the consent of the legal copyright owner.
- Students who have been allocated work to do in the Suite have priority
of use.
- Do not tell other people your Username or Password.
- Distribution or display of material which is unsolicited, illegal,
offensive, discriminatory, or sexist in any way is illegal and contravenes
the rules for acceptable use of the University of Adelaide network.
E-mails and other electronic documents are considered as tangible documents.
Users can be charged with libel if the transmitted material contains
material that may be construed as defamatory.
